Safeguarding Questions for Working in the Arts Training Offers

VDT is a sector leader in placing safeguarding at the heart of creative practice, process and production.

Our extensive work with young people and ‘at risk’ groups for over 30 years has resulted in the production of an online resource, Safeguarding Questions Working in the Arts around which VDT’s in person Training Day and E-Learning offer are based.

Our creative work takes creative risks. The way we manage and facilitate young people, mentees, trainees, our collaborators and staff does not. Instead, VDT has developed a person-centred, consent driven, reflective methodology which embeds a robust, protective mindset in everything we do.

VDT is a sector leader for researching and placing safeguarding at the heart of its creative practice. Whilst Vincent’s production work takes creative risks, our studio practice does not. VDT’s approach to facilitation is safe, person centered, consent driven, reflective and collaborative, with company members highly experienced in embedding a protective mindset in everything we do.

Safeguarding Questions for Working in the Arts Training Day

Vincent Dance Theatre deliver an in person CPD Training Day facilitated by Artistic Director Charlotte Vincent, exploring the practical application of our online Safeguarding resource, designed specifically for people working in the arts.

The Training Day covers essential Safeguarding protocols, explains definitions, offers a peer-to-peer learning opportunity and encourages participants to interrogate the practical considerations involved in Safeguarding yourself and your groups at all stages of creative practice, process and production, from planning projects to facilitating workshops, creating or producing and presenting the work in arts and non-arts contexts, on film and online.

Our in person Training Day covers

  • Safety Agreements
Clarification around responsibilities of the Gatekeeper v Artist
    Health and Safety v Safeguarding
    Supervision and support
    Therapy v Therapeutic considerations
    Understanding What is Safeguarding?
    Creative Risks v Safeguarding Risks
    Definitions of ‘inclusive practice’
Reporting Disclosures and Raising a Cause for Concern

Then, using print outs of our online resource as a framework for discussion, the Training Day interrogates the complexity of working with non-professionals and in community, education or professional settings. We look at the challenges of planning, producing and making work, considering safeguarding from Artist, Participant and Audience perspectives with room for knowledge exchange, sharing of individual experiences and signposting to further relevant resources.

WHO IS THIS TRAINING DAY FOR?

Performing arts and dance practitioners, freelance artists, artistic directors, general managers and executive directors of National Portfolio Organisations and arts organisations, independent producers, arts-based facilitators, studio owners and project managers.

Both CPD opportunities are led by Dr Charlotte Vincent, an experienced group facilitator and Artistic Director / Chief Executive / Safeguarding Lead of VDT. Charlotte is trained in Safeguarding Level 1, 2 and Lead, Trauma Informed Practice and Mental Health First Aid.

VDT’s Safeguarding Questions in the Arts CPD offers are informed by Vincent’s extensive experience working with adults at risk and young people over three decades in the arts and by VDT’s rigorous Safeguarding Policy and Procedures. It is not a replacement for Level 1, 2 or 3 Safeguarding Training. Participants without these qualifications are signposted towards them as part of the day.

‘A collaborative, sharing, open, invigorating event. Blue sky thinking meets practical frameworks. This workshop identified the need for a protective mindset, the importance of reflective practice and ‘after care’. Participant CPD
